Say It Loud: Black Neurodivergent and Proud

It’s Black History Month, a time when we celebrate the many contributions of Black and African communities. That celebration must include our neurodivergent children and teens. Neurodiversity reminds us that ADHD, autism, dyslexia and other learning differences are natural expressions of human brain development. They are not deficits–they are differences with remarkable strengths.

The holidays can be a magical time, but there’s a lot going on. How do you retain the joy and meaning of the season while minimizing the stress? Here are a few tips:

  1. Keep it simple. The holidays need not be elaborate. If you find there’s too much to do and it burdens more than benefits your family, consider where change is needed and make it.
  1. Stay focused. Figure out what’s important to your family and focus on that. Plan activities, attend events, make purchases and gifts that align with what the holiday means for you and your family.
  2. Give generously. It’s the season of giving. Help a neighbor in need. Spend time with those who are often forgotten. Donate to a favorite cause. Don’t do it alone, get your kids in on the action!
  3. Give good words. While it may be the season of good cheer, sometimes finding kind words and gifting them to those around us is not easy. It’s a perfect time to help your children to share kind words. When we encourage our children to see good in the world, they will. It’s all around us if we choose to see it.

Overall, there’s a lot going on during the season. Be intentional about what it means for you and your family. Keep it simple. Focus on what’s meaningful. Show kindness and words and actions. Wishing you peace and joy during the season!
